What is the codice fiscale?
The codice fiscale is the 16-character alphanumeric code that identifies every person in their dealings with Italian institutions — roughly Italy's equivalent of a Social Security number. It is issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency) and you'll need it for a bank account, a rental contract, a job, university enrolment, the national health service and much more. How the code is built
The 16 characters encode your personal data, in five blocks plus a final check character:
- Surname (3 letters): first consonants, then vowels; padded with
Xif needed. - First name (3 letters): same rule, but with 4+ consonants the 1st, 3rd and 4th are used.
- Year of birth (2 digits) and month (1 letter), from a conventional sequence (A = January … T = December).
- Day of birth and sex (2 digits): the day, plus 40 for women.
- Place of birth (4 characters): the cadastral code of the Italian municipality — or a
Zcountry code if born abroad. - Check character (1 letter): computed from the other 15 to catch typos.

What is the codice fiscale?
The codice fiscale is Italy's personal identification code — roughly the equivalent of a SSN (US) or National Insurance number (UK). It is a 16-character code generated from your name, date of birth, sex and place of birth, issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (the Italian Revenue Agency). You need it for almost everything in Italy: bank accounts, rental contracts, university enrolment, the national health service.
Is the code calculated here legally valid?
The calculation follows the official algorithm and is correct in the vast majority of cases. However, only the Agenzia delle Entrate issues the officially assigned code, because it also handles omocodia — the rare case where two people would generate the same code.
Is my personal data safe?
Yes. Everything runs client-side in your browser: your name, date of birth and other details are never transmitted to a server or stored anywhere.
I was born outside Italy — can I still calculate my code?
Yes. In the place-of-birth field, select your country of birth: the code will use the corresponding Belfiore country code (starting with the letter Z) instead of an Italian municipality code.
